"Water For Life" - Session 2000/01

Ekwendeni Mission Station - Malawi

A total of £9,000 was raised for a new water system for the Ekwendeni Mission Station in Malawi. The funding helped purchase pipes and construct water storage tanks serving the hospital, school, skills training centre and staff housing.

The system is now complete and operational, providing a regular and guaranteed supply, much to the delight of the local people. This has changed their lives.

Livingston Synod of the Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP) express their grateful thanks for what has been achieved.

Ekwendeni Mission Station, in the north of Malawi, was established by missionaries of the Church of Scotland in the late 1800’s. Today, under the charge of CCAP, it is a major centre of Christian service and outreach. The centre includes the major referral hospital for the region, a large secondary and primary school, a lay training centre and headquarters for youth activities. The mission station plays an important role in the life and work of the Church in Malawi and its fight against AIDS and disease.

Although a river runs nearby, water services have been difficult and unpredictable. The new facilities will help the centre deliver its work effectively to the benefit of more and more people.

At the World Mission Fund Cheque presentation Evening hosted by the Borders Battalion in November 2001 a cheque for £9,000 was presented to the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland for the appeal.
