Skills Training in Bangladesh 2005 Appeal - Update

15 July 2007

Warmest greetings from the Church of Bangladesh.

I am writing this to say a BIG THANK YOU to you for the generous grant you have sent for us for the Mobile Training Course we organise for the Young Boys and Girls through the Christ Church Trade School, Jessore. In fact it is really quite a big sum of money for us which came at a time, when we almost decided not to go for the next Mobile Training Course due to lack of money. We are indeed grateful to you for your kind care and concern about us.

We now decided to continue to go for at least 2/3 more Mobile Training Courses. In each course we bring in 30/35 young boys and girls for 6 months training in Trades like Electric, Auto-mobile, Welding etc. From our experience we found this is quite helpful for boys and girls who are drop-outs from Schools. When they get this training they become assets to their families.

Thanking you once again for this. Please pass on greetings and our special thanks to the Boys Brigade members who generously have equipped their brothers and sisters here in Bangladesh.

With best regards,

Yours sincerely,

Bishop Michael Baroi,
Church of Bangladesh.

1st Buckie raise £1,800 - 2004 Appeal
1st Buckie Junior Section

How did they do it? Enthusiasm and simple direct methods – Collecting Cards; the make up model supplied in the World Mission Fund pack and filling jam jars with 1p and 2p coins. The Boys were given the choices and 95% opted for the jam jar. But a little goes a long way and it is amazing what you can collect over a few months.

The only downside was that someone had to count the 1p’s and 2p’s and get them to the bank – but satisfying when so much was achieved.

268th Glasgow raise over £1,400 - 2003 Appeal

This was again done with enthusiasm. As well as using the collecting cards, old toys were on sale, home baking and soft drink sales, plus a “fun” bag-packing stint at the local Asda store. Many supermarkets are delighted to help in such a worthy cause, particularly when boys of their own age, hopes and desires are assisted through their efforts.

Block Making Project 2003 & 2004 Appeal

Gordon and SandyGordon Grant of the 205th Glasgow Company and Sandy Currie from 1st Whithorn Company visited BB Ghana this summer from 24-31 July to see how progress was going on the Block Making Project which had been the focus of the World Mission Fund appeal 2001-2003. The visit was made possible through the Church of Scotland World Mission Department.

Gordon and Sandy at the brick making centreThey visited the project centre in Accra, located next to the national office, where work was already well under way and students would be given instruction on the manufacture of concrete blocks. The idea is that, once trained, these young people return to their own village areas and are able to start up their own production ventures, providing much needed income to families, local villagers and even BB companies.

Whilst the centre in Accra has an electric press to help with production, the instruction covers how to make blocks without this facility as, in the villages, there may be no electrical supply.

Members of BB GhanaGordon and Sandy also saw the tailoring project, also based at the national headquarters and set up a few years ago, where similar skills instruction was being carried out and local uniform items produced. This again provides employment and income as well as local sustainable resources for BB Ghana.

Sandy and GordonThey were able to sample local cuisine – which was quite adventurous and visited several churches, schools and BB companies as well as an officer training course, travelling up the coast to Sekondi and Takoradi. They visited Almira Castle which was one of the many centres for the slave trade in past centuries and reminded all of the impact of history and some of the less welcome aspects of human existence.

The warmth, Christian commitment and welcome of the Ghana people will be remembered as well as gratitude for what was made possible through the support raised by BB Companies here in Scotland.
